CEDEP had the honor of presenting a poster at Malawi’s inaugural National Public Health Research Dissemination Conference 2025. Our presentation, titled “Exacerbating the Crisis: Funding Cuts and Their Effects on LGBTIQ+ Health in Malawi,” focused on the pressing issues faced by the LGBTIQ+ community due to recent funding reductions.

Funding cuts have significantly heightened the risks of violence and discrimination for the LGBTIQ+ population in Malawi. Our research highlights how these financial constraints exacerbate existing vulnerabilities, making individuals more susceptible to harm and social stigma.

One of the most immediate impacts of funding cuts has been the closure of vital services, particularly Drop-In Centers (DICs). These centers have historically provided essential health services, including Antiretroviral Therapy (ART) and preventive care. Their closure has severely limited access to healthcare resources, which are crucial for the well-being of the LGBTIQ+ community.

The lack of access to necessary healthcare services has led to deteriorating health outcomes among many in the LGBTIQ+ community. Our findings reveal an alarming increase in health issues, including high viral loads, as individuals struggle to obtain the medical care they need.

Furthermore, the absence of supportive healthcare environments has resulted in a growing hesitance among LGBTIQ+ individuals to seek necessary medical assistance. This reluctance increases the risks of HIV transmission and treatment default, compounding the public health crisis in the region.

We are thankful for the opportunity to share our research and insights with other professionals at the conference. The event fostered meaningful discussions around the unique health challenges faced by marginalized communities in Malawi.

Pempho Sinkanda, M&E Manager at CEDEP, remarked on the experience: “Presenting at the conference was both an honor and a critical step toward raising awareness about the issues affecting LGBTIQ+ health in Malawi. It’s essential that we continue to advocate for funding and support to ensure these communities receive the care they deserve.”

Our participation in the National Public Health Research Dissemination Conference 2025 reinforces our commitment to advocating for the health and rights of the LGBTIQ+ population in Malawi. Moving forward, it is crucial to address the funding cuts that have exacerbated the challenges faced by this community, ensuring that everyone has access to the healthcare they need.
