In recent years, data showed that LGBTIQ+ community members often encountered significant challenges when accessing healthcare services, particularly in public hospitals. These individuals frequently faced discrimination, stigma, and inadequate treatment, which deterred them from seeking the care they needed.

To combat these issues, the Centre for the Development of People (CEDEP) took proactive steps to foster a more inclusive healthcare environment. In collaboration with various stakeholders including NAC, CEDEP conducted a transformative three-day Trainers of Trainers training program in Mponela, specifically designed for senior health providers in Malawi.

The primary goal of this training was to empower health providers to deliver health-friendly services to the LGBTIQ+ community. The training covered essential topics, including:

  • Understanding Key Populations: Identifying the unique health needs and challenges faced by marginalized groups.
  • Cultural Competency: Equipping health providers with the skills to deliver care that is respectful and inclusive.
  • Creating Safe Spaces: Encouraging the development of healthcare environments where all individuals feel comfortable seeking assistance.

Temwa Kamanga, a clinician and participant in this training, expressed her enthusiasm: “This training was a game-changer for us as health providers. It opened our eyes to the realities faced by key populations and equipped us with the necessary tools to provide compassionate care. I believe that with this knowledge, we can create a safer and more supportive environment for everyone.”

The trainers who participated in this program not only enhanced their own skills but also took responsibility for disseminating this knowledge throughout their respective facilities. By equipping other health providers with the tools and knowledge necessary to implement health-friendly practices, we can ensure that all individuals, regardless of their backgrounds, receive respectful and inclusive care.

This initiative was a crucial step toward achieving health equity in Malawi. By addressing the disparities faced by key populations, we contributed to a healthier society where everyone has access to the care they deserve.
