CEDEP is making significant strides in training health service providers in Mponela, focusing on inclusive care for the LGBTIQ+ community. This initiative aims to improve HIV service uptake among key populations (KPs), addressing the stigma and discrimination they often face, particularly in public hospitals where mistreatment is prevalent.
Approximately 80 health workers, including clinicians, nurses, and HIV testing counselors from Mzimba North, Lilongwe, Mangochi, and Blantyre, are participating in this crucial training. The goal is to equip these professionals with the knowledge and skills necessary to create a welcoming and supportive environment for all individuals, regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity.
Maria Ngulube, the Chief of Party at CEDEP, emphasized the importance of understanding the unique needs of the LGBTIQ+ community. She stated, “This training is a step toward ensuring that all individuals receive the compassionate and respectful care they deserve.”
Dali Lungu, a Condom Coordinator for Mzimba North, also highlighted the training’s impact, noting, “This training was an eye-opener for most of the health workers. It highlighted the need for sensitivity and understanding when dealing with KPs.”
By fostering understanding and compassion among healthcare professionals, CEDEP is committed to reducing barriers to care, enhancing HIV service uptake, and improving health outcomes for the LGBTIQ+ community. This initiative marks a crucial step toward inclusive healthcare, promoting dignity and respect for all individuals within the health service landscape.
