In a significant step towards social change, faith-based leaders from across Malawi gathered for a transformative workshop focused on LGBTIQ inclusion. This landmark event happened in Lilongwe on 27th January, 2026, and aimed to engage leaders who hold considerable influence within their communities, fostering open dialogues that challenge stigma and promote understanding on LGBTIQ+ issues.

The workshop kicked off with a powerful address from the UNAIDS Country Executive Director, David Chipanta, who underscored the essential role of faith leaders in advocating for human rights, particularly in the context of the ongoing fight against HIV/AIDS. “Engaging faith leaders in conversations about LGBTIQ inclusion is crucial for dismantling barriers to health and rights,” he stated. This message set the tone for the day’s discussions, emphasizing that inclusion is not only a matter of social justice but also critical to addressing health disparities within communities affected by HIV/AIDS.

The interactive workshops formed the heart of the day’s activities, offering leaders the chance to discuss their concerns and misconceptions openly. Facilitated by experts on sexual health and human rights, plus a presentation from the Malawi AIDS Commission (NAC), it provided valuable insights into the lived realities of LGBTIQ individuals and how they are linked to HIV/AIDS, equipping participants with knowledge and tools to understand the things deeply.

Pilira Ndaferankhonde, the Executive Director of MANERELA+, expressed satisfaction with the workshop’s outcomes. “This workshop has opened the eyes of religious leaders to view the issue of sexual minorities from a different perspective,” she stated. Her call for more training highlighted the urgent need for continued education among faith leaders.

This workshop marks a significant step towards a more inclusive future for LGBTIQ+ individuals in Malawi.
